Gwaelod-y-Garth (Welsh for 'Foot of the Garth') is a village in the parish of Pentyrch, Cardiff in Wales. In Elizabethan times, Gwaelod-y-Garth was noted for its iron-ore mines. The ironworks were opened between 1565 and 1625, and then re-opened in the 19th century by the Blackmoor Booker company. On December 6, 1875, the Lan pit in Gwaelod y Garth was the scene of a massive explosion described at the time as “the most serious pit disaster of the year”. Norma Procter, a well known environmental campaigner in South Wales, alongside members of Pentrych Community Council, commissioned a memorial plaque for those killed, which was unveiled in December 2012. Work has since been ongoing to preserve the mine entrance as a heritage site.

The Gwaelod y Garth Village Hall  hosts a variety of lessons in the evenings. These include Zumba, Taekwon-Do and Pilates. For further information please see notice board in Village Hall foyer.
